My name is Leslie Beets and I have a complaint against Travelers Insurance Company that I’d like to share with others… Four years ago I purchased a homeowner’s insurance policy with Travelers Insurance for my home. I paid them on-time every month for 4 years. A few months ago I decided to transfer my auto insurance to Geico and they offered to also give me a quote for homeowner’s insurance. Interestingly enough, the new homeowner’s policy quote was much less than what I was paying, so I decided to change policies. Even more interesting than that was the fact that Geico underwrites their homeowner’s insurance policies through Travelers. Because there was a significant difference in annual premium, I contacted Travelers directly to find out how they could insure my home on a new policy for much less than what I was currently paying, for the same coverage. After months of communication with Travelers, it was determined that they in fact had been over charging me based on the incorrect square footage of my home. Once that had been brought to light, I requested a refund for the 4 years of overpayment. To be a little more specific, when an insurance company asks you the total square footage of your home, what they are really asking you is the square footage of your home minus a finished basement and garage. I learned that when I gave them the square footage of my home, they added the fact that I also had a finished basement and a 2-car garage to the square footage, thus unbeknownst to me increasing my total square footage by almost 1,000 square feet. Because my house was new, they didn’t bother to send an adjuster out to look at my property, and now some how it is my fault that they calculated the square footage of my home incorrectly. Regardless of whose fault you believe it to be…they admit that they overcharged me and still deny a full 4 years refund for the overpayment. It sure makes me wonder if the roles were reversed, and they had discovered that I had been under paying them for 4 years, would they only request that I pay the additional premium for just 1 of those years and waive the other 3? After my point of contact at Travelers (Chris, 518-761-3558) discussed this with his underwriting department, and after they admitted that they had in fact been overcharging me, they decided to issue me a $184 refund for 1 year of overpayment only - with the explanation that “typically when this happens, we only go back one year.” That comment alone leads me to believe that I am not the only consumer that this has happened to… I received the $184 refund check a few weeks later, but continued to pursue a refund for the additional 3 years. While Chris continued to investigate, another check for $184 was sent to me…and like the first check, I cashed it. Exactly 4 days later, I received a bill from Travelers for $184 and a phone call from Chris stating that they had inadvertently sent the second check and that I should promptly return the funds. Since I have no intention of paying Travelers $184, when as far as I am concerned they still owe me for 2 additional years of overpayment, I am faced with the fact that they are planning to send this bill to a collection company. I have extremely good credit, and pay all of my bills on time every month, and do not wish to have this affect my credit rating. However, this is now a matter of principal and I refuse to return the funds. In fact, I am still pursuing avenues to try and get a refund for the remaining 2 years. Consumers need to be aware!! If you’d like additional details, feel free to contact me at lesliebeets@braemarnet.com. I appreciate your taking the time to read my complaint and would appreciate any intervention. Sincerely, Leslie Beets
